India
The Progress out of Poverty Index® (PPI®) for India is an easy-to-use, objective client poverty assessment tool. The PPI estimates the likelihood that a household has income/expenditure below a national or international poverty line. See ""PPI At-A-Glance"" below for an updated list of poverty lines and rates for India.
The PPI scorecard uses simple non-financial indicators that are easy to collect accurately. This means field personnel can quickly capture and verify the indicators at the point of collection. After PPI scorecard information is collected, a “look-up table” is used to associate scores with poverty likelihoods and aggregate poverty level results. The PPI allows programs to target services to poorer clients, calculate poverty levels of current clients, track changes in poverty levels over time, and segment clients for market research.
The latest version of the PPI for India was created in March of 2012 and based on results of Household Consumer Expenditure Survey - Round 66 (July 2009 to June 2010) conducted by National Sample Survey Office (NSSO).
In India, Grameen Foundation USA operates through its wholly owned subsidiary, Grameen Foundation India (GFI). GFI has been set up as a social business that catalyzes double bottom line approaches to serving the poor and the poorest. Grameen Foundation India (GFI) strives to create an ecosystem where pro-poor organizations use client level poverty and related data to design products and services in order to better serve the target segments. GFI facilitates and provides the necessary technical support to pro poor organisations and other stakeholders such as Investors and Funders to implementing the PPI.
The PPI description and documents are based on or taken from The Progress out of Poverty Index®: A Simple Poverty Scorecard for India, by Mark Schreiner of Microfinance Risk Management, L.L.C.
